KANSAS STATE VETERAN EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
Kansas provides veterans with preference during the employment process for a state job. Only certain veterans receive this preference, but it does guarantee an interview for the position. Those who qualify meet one of the criteria below:
- Any veteran with a campaign medal
- Any veteran with a service-connected disability
- Any retired veteran at an O-3 level or below, OR
- The spouse of a 100% disabled veteran
KANSAS VETERAN FINANCIAL BENEFITS
Income Tax
The Sunflower State does not tax military retirement pay.
Homestead Act
The Homestead Act provides a refund for disabled veterans. To qualify, Veterans must meet these criteria:
- Be residents of Kansas
- Be honorably discharged
- Have at least a 50% service-connected VA rated disability
Note: Surviving spouses remain eligible until remarriage
KANSAS VETERAN RECREATION BENEFITS
Hunting & Fishing Licenses
National Guard Members and resident veterans with a VA disability rating of 30% or greater can obtain Kansas hunting and fishing licenses at no charge.
In addition, Kansas makes available all annual state licenses, permits and stamps to active duty military personnel at the resident rate, provided they are stationed in Kansas. Fort Riley’s active duty military personnel can to enter a military permit drawing to take elk.
State Park Admission
Kansas National Guard and all veterans with a VA disability rating of 30% or more receive admission to state parks at a discount.
KANSAS STATE VETERANS HOMES
Kansas operates two Veteran Homes for those who receive ‘other than dishonorable’ discharges. The homes are located in Winfield and Fort Dodge and serve Veterans who are either disabled, impoverished or willing to pay for care. Veteran spouses may join them if space allows.
KANSAS STATE VETERANS CEMETERIES
Kansas operates four veterans’ cemeteries and do not require Kansas residency for burial. There is no fee for either the veteran or their dependents, but there are some qualifying conditions. Veterans must have:
- Received an ‘other than dishonorable discharge’
- Have died on active duty service to their country, OR
- Be a Guard or Reservist with 20 or more years of qualifying service
The state Veteran cemeteries are located in Ft. Dodge, Ft. Riley, Wakeeney, and Winfield.
