If you are Veteran traveling to a VA accredited building for medical services, then you may be eligible for mileage reimbursement.
In some cases, a veteran may have to travel beyond their hometown to get to a VA medical facility. Although this can be inconvenient, the VA does provide compensation for your travels.
In order to qualify to be financially reimbursed for travel, you need to meet one of the following criteria:
- You have a service connected rating of 30% or higher
- You are traveling for treatment of a service connected condition
- You receive a VA pension
- Your income does not exceed the maximum VA pension rate
- You are traveling for a scheduled C&P Exam
Beneficiary Travel Rates
The current rating for mileage reimbursement is $0.415 (41.5 cents) per mile. If you have a scheduled visit, such as a C&P Exam, then you are eligible for round trip compensation. If you made an unscheduled visit, such as an Emergency Room visit, then your return trip is the only portion of your travel that can be reimbursed.
How to Apply for Travel Compensation
To apply for beneficiary travel, you will need to complete VA Form 10-3542 (Veteran/Beneficiary Claim for Reimbursement of Travel Expenses). You can submit the form via fax, mail, or in-person to your local Beneficiary Travel Office. You must submit the form within 30 days of when the travel was completed.
Beneficiary travel reimbursement has deductibles on all medical trips except C & P exams. They have a $3 deductible on a one-way trip and a $6 deductible for a round trip. Any calendar month has a maximum deductible of $18.
